The Book of Psalms has since the time of King David been a catalyst for the examination of human emotions, ranging from hate to love and sorrow to joy. The words written by the ancient psalmists are still very much relevent in the 21st Century. For the artist Michael Jessing, the painting of illustrations for the complete book, has been both an artistic as well as a spiritual journey. Exhibitions of the work took place betwee1997 and 2001 at the Bookcase in Carlisle with other exhibitions in New York, Edinburgh, and Oxford..A booklet of selected psalms and the accompanying illustrations is available from the artist.
This is a unique work, that has not been attempted since the medieval psalters. The artist hopes that the illustrations will be an inspiration for others to delve into this sacred text.
